How do you decide which job offer to accept?

Let’s be honest, there has never been a better time to be looking for a job. There is a desperate shortage of workers for all kinds of role – as long as your salary expectations do not exceed your value to an employer.

Employers are having to outsource all kinds of work abroad from admin to sales functions to make a business viable. It’s a fresh and exciting option for employers but it doesn’t come close to replacing home-grown talent. As I’ve written before, you can’t outsource the job of a plumber or a hairdresser!

So if you have multiple job offers, how do you decide which to accept?

You knew this was coming – it’s not just about money! Think about training opportunities, a clear and planned career ladder, a short commute (and/or working from home if that appeals). And does your prospective employer feel like a fun and pleasant place to spend 40 or more hours a week? Or do you one day want to run your own business? Would a prospective employer hold back your progression and training for fear of you working for yourself in the same business? Or would they offer you a Management Buy-in scheme so you would have some real ownership in the business that you work for?

Decisions decisions but it’s nice to have options. One BIG don’t – don’t accept a job and then just not show up! Get on that phone at the earliest opportunity and explain you’ve had a different offer which you are going to accept, you never know you may want to work for that Company again one day.

Good luck and happy job hunting!
