Driver’s mate or Removals Porter – which job are you best suited to?

Whilst you might think these two job roles are pretty much the same – they both involve shifting heavy stuff into or out of people’s homes, right?! – there are actually many differences between the two roles.

Both jobs involve lifting heavy items so physical ability and good technique as well as spatial awareness are vital. Early starts are the norm and sometimes overtime is available. Weekend working is common especially for home deliveries for the likes of Argos and John Lewis. Good appearance is essential, so no ripped jeans or T-Shirts with slogans! Safety-footwear is vital.

A Driver’s mate might do up to twenty deliveries a day. He or she needs to get on with the driver as they will be together all day! The mate may be asked to call ahead to customers to advise them of ETA’s, delays or for directions. So a good, clear telephone manner is important. If the sat-nav fails or isn’t appropriate for the delivery area then the mate might need to map read.

A Removals Porter will potentially be with a bigger crew of colleagues but may only be with one client all day or for several days. A night or more in a hotel may be required if the job is a long way away. A relationship with the people moving house may develop – the clients may be tense as moving house is very stressful! Skill at packing fragile objects may well be required. You will be moving people’s precious possessions around their old or their new home or both so be careful!

Recruitment Solutions have supplied staff for these jobs for twenty five years so are well versed in explaining what the roles require!
